On delicate surfaces such as screens, spectacle lenses and high-gloss lacquer, a dry cloth is best avoided altogether.
Technique
Wipe in one direction rather than back and forth, so you carry the dirt off the surface instead of spreading it around. Fold the cloth into quarters and you have eight clean faces to work through before it needs a rinse. On glass, mirrors and windows, a damp cloth used in a zigzag from the top down gives you a clear finish first time.

How to wash them
Rinse the cloth out by hand after every use so it keeps working. Every so often, wash it at 40 degrees without fabric conditioner, which would coat the fibres and stop them absorbing. Skip the tumble dryer and hang it on an airer instead, because a cloth that dries out properly gives mould nothing to grow in.
Where to keep them
Once washed and dried, keep your cloths somewhere dry and clean so they are ready the next time you need them. Make sure they are completely dry before you put them away, or they will smell musty by the weekend.

Lukewarm water with a drop of washing-up liquid: Mix lukewarm water with a small amount of washing-up liquid in a bucket. That lifts grease and traffic film off the glass.
