Cleaning with microfibre cloths: tips and tricks

A microfibre cloth makes the whole job easier: less scrubbing, fewer bottles, and a better result at the end of it. Here are the tricks worth knowing, and how to get the most out of our microfibre cloths for a properly clean, hygienic finish.
Why clean with microfibre?
What makes microfibre so effective
Microfibre cloths are woven from fibres finer than a human hair, which is why they pick up even the smallest particles of dirt and grease and hold on to them. That lets you clean almost any surface without reaching for anything harsh. Use the cloth damp: wet it and wring it out well, so the fibres lift the dirt away and the surface dries clear behind you.
Are microfibre cloths hygienic?
They are. The fine fibres take up bacteria along with the dirt, so what comes off the surface goes into the cloth rather than around the room. Rinse the cloth out as you go, keep a different colour for the bathroom and the kitchen, and you avoid carrying anything from one room to the next.
Using microfibre for different jobs
How wet should the cloth be?
For most jobs, water is all you need. Wet the cloth, wring it out well and the moisture will loosen the dirt so the fibres can take it up. Never wash your cloths with fabric conditioner, which coats the fibres and stops them absorbing.
Which surfaces can you use it on?
Microfibre suits glass, stainless steel, wood and plastic alike. On glass and mirrors, a well wrung out cloth is what gets you a clear finish with no streaks. On hard surfaces such as worktops and tables, work the same way: damp, wrung out, one pass.

How to wash them
To keep your cloths going for years, rinse them out thoroughly by hand after every use so the fibres stay clear. Every so often give them a machine wash at 40 degrees without fabric conditioner, and keep them out of the tumble dryer. Always let them dry out completely before you use them again, so nothing has a chance to grow.
How often do they need replacing?
Not for a long time. These cloths take wash after wash before they lose their grip, and rinsing by hand between machine washes stretches the life of our Wonder Cloths further still. Spread over the years you will use them, that adds up to real money staying in your pocket.
