1. How tightly the fibre is woven
The finer and denser the weave, the more surface actually touches the dirt. A loosely woven cloth mostly pushes dirt along. You feel it while you work: a good cloth has grip on glass.
2. How much the cloth takes up

3. How many washes it survives
This is where the real price difference sits, and it is not on the receipt. A cloth with a loose structure starts to shed as soon as the weave gives, and from then on it absorbs less. Looked after properly, an iZi-Clean cloth lasts one to three years.

How to wash the cloth, and why it matters
This is the one place where people ruin their own cloth.
Wash at 40 degrees. Hotter damages the fibre, and a damaged fibre absorbs less.
No fabric softener. This is the most important rule of all. Softener wraps a film around the fibre that blocks exactly what you use the cloth for: taking up water. One wash with softener and the cloth feels different.
Not in the tumble dryer. Same reason as the temperature.
Wash them on their own, or with other microfibre. Cotton towels shed lint that settles into the fibre.
What the cloth does not do
This belongs here too, otherwise the rest does not hold up.
The cloth prevents streaks and build-up. It is not a descaler. Limescale that has sat for years, on a shower screen that was never wiped down, will not come off with it. That is a job for a product, and afterwards the cloth keeps it clean.
The same goes for baked-on grease and for a stain that has gone into the fabric. A wonder product, but it cannot always work wonders.
